Outerknown’s California Series

Background

The latest collection from sustainable Culver City brand Outerknown brings French Terry knits to sweat separates.

The backstory behind the collection’s name is in its domestic sourcing and production, most of it in California. The pieces are made from what is called Climate Beneficial Cotton, or a more mindfully grown cotton that factors in soil health and labor on farms.

The cotton is purchased through the California Cotton and Climate Coalition, of which Outerknown is a founding partner. The coalition works with farms focused on methods that boost soil biology, while cutting back on the use of synthetic fertilizers, insecticides and herbicides.

The cotton is grown on two farms (Bowles Farming Company and Stone Land Company), ginned in the Central Valley and spun in North Carolina. It’s then knit, cut, sewn and dyed in Los Angeles and El Monte.

Other brands also purchasing cotton from the coalition include Reformation, Carhartt and Mate.
