Urban Outfitters has a few good quarters under its belt and is now playing offense with a new store format aimed at Gen Z.
The retailer, part of the Philadelphia-based Urban Outfitters Inc., opened its newest store format at the Glendale Galleria mall. It’s the second of the refreshed doors to open after the September launch in Houston, Texas.
The new store is localized to the community, with Glendale carrying a larger assortment of men’s graphic T-shirts, hoodies and pants.
“Our approach to men’s is about delivering a complete, modern wardrobe that balances trend essentials with the best of brands,” Urban Outfitters General Manager of Merchandising Bijon Javadzadeh said.

The Gen Z-geared stores are also seeing more beauty products, company-owned labels and modular fixtures that allow for faster floor changes.
Urban Outfitters President Shea Jensen said the refreshed format provides the retailer “freedom to shape our stores around our customers.”
The next of these new-format stores is expected to open in December in Bethesda, Maryland.
With Glendale, the company’s banking on renewed interest among the youth in traditional malls, although the stores will not be exclusive to shopping centers.
After a period of slumping sales – Urban Outfitters was the laggard in a portfolio that also includes Anthropologie, Free People and Free People Movement – it notched sales gains the past two quarters.
Things appear to be getting back on track. In the most recently reported quarter ended July 31, Urban Outfitters sales increased 5.2 percent to $333.2 million.
