Newer names are expanding at retail as others experiment with temporary formats.

Here’s a look at this weekend’s store openings in Los Angeles and Orange counties.

Common Market at Row DTLA

Contemporary basics label Mod Ref will open its Common Market boutique at the Row DTLA Aug. 2.

The maker of reasonably priced men’s and women’s essentials will be located between Omamimini and General Store in Building M2 of the former American Apparel headquarters.

Founder Andrew Kim started Mod Ref in 2012 as a purveyor of “elevated essentials” that are positioned between “timeless” pieces and more contemporary, directional looks.

That includes the $74 Tyler cardigan with flared sleeves and welt pockets and $64 V-neck, capped sleeve Pamela top for women. On the men’s side, the assortment includes slacks under $100 and an assortment of jackets ranging from chore coat styles to cropped, collared silhouettes all under $200.

The Row DTLA location joins Mod Ref’s other stores on Broome Street in SoHo and the LAB Anti-Mall in Costa Mesa.

The downtown store will be closed on Mondays, open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends.

Basketcase will reopen its Costa Mesa studio to the public.

Lisa Says Gah x Ella Mae

Los Angeles sustainable fashion brand Ella Mae will set up shop at Lisa Says Gah’s Sunset Boulevard store this weekend.

The California-made line includes pieces that are naturally dyed and made from deadstock fabrics or natural fibers.
