The Mojave Flea Trading Post in Palm Springs has made the concept of the department store relevant again.
The marketplace for local brands and retailers sits in 10,000 square feet on Indian Canyon Drive, where it opened in 2021.
Local brands and retailers are allotted varying amounts of space within the store to merchandise however they like, allowing them brick-and-mortar space in Palm Springs without the hassle of a lease, hiring labor to assist customers or be on site every day during operating hours.
“We pride ourselves on creating experiential retail and marketplaces in unconventional locations,” Mojave Flea founder James Morelos told WWD in 2022.
Customers can roam the L-shaped building and sift through accessories and apparel from the longstanding Prism Boutique in Long Beach, peruse vintage findings from Summer Vega, admire the handiwork of Fried Rice NYC’s kimono-inspired blazers or shotgun-distressed shirts from Totally Blown and smile at the mini versions of the popular David and Diana concrete pots.
The Palm Springs marketplace concept’s popularity has since led Morelos to expand to Yucca Valley and San Francisco.
